Waterless cosmetics: a new ecological trend

Environmental issues are no longer limited to our food consumption or our means of transport. We observe this in the field of cosmetics which is beginning to offer products that resonate with this quest for transparency and ethics . Waterless cosmetics , also called waterless or waterfree in English, are proof of this.

What is water-free cosmetics?

A water-free cosmetic product is aptly named since it is a beauty product that does not contain water in its composition, like solid cosmetics.

Although this trend has recently appeared in the West, waterless saw the light of day in South Korea in 2015 with the Waterless Beauty branch.

In addition to thinking about the benefits for the skin , these products are being developed following ecological awareness on the part of consumers and businesses.

What is the use of water in the composition?

Water is everywhere. Especially in cosmetics. On average, a cosmetic can contain between 70% and 80% water .

It is used to solubilize ingredients, to obtain an emulsion, to create a liquid product, etc. Brands can abuse it to raw material costs use fewer active ingredients .

Water is a neutral ingredient because it is not thermal water or floral water which have specific interesting qualities.

Furthermore, the presence of water in a cosmetic product requires the formulator to add one or more preservatives (chemical or of natural origin) in order to avoid bacterial contamination linked to the use of the product.

Quite unknown in their mode of use , powders, oily products, balms, butters or any other water-free cosmetics are numerous and can take multiple forms .

waterless cosmetics

1. More ecological

Global water consumption has exploded over the past fifty years. Yet less than 1% of the world's water is drinkable . Which means that by 2025, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), ⅔ of the world's population could be threatened by water shortage.

Water-free cosmetics are therefore more ecological because they can do without this precious resource. Consumption is lower and so is packaging. Solid products can be found in bulk or have eco-responsible packaging . They allow you to declutter the shelves and have a minimalist skincare routine .

2. Healthier

Since there is no water, there is no need for preservatives in the composition. The risk of allergy or irritation is reduced and natural compounds are favored.

3. More effective

The active compounds are not drowned in water or unnecessary liquids which makes the beauty product much more interesting and effective . Water is often replaced by formulas that put plant extracts and oils at the heart of the formulation.

“For example, oils are interesting because they support the role of sebum and hydrolipidic film.”>
